Year 2 & 3 TEs: Some Take a Little Longer

The last 3 articles have been the Year 2 series, so today we’re going to cheat a little. We’re expanding the field of TEs to include Year 3 players. The reason? While last year we had Mark Andrews (TE5) and Dallas Goedert (TE10) break into the top 10 at their position, a lot of times TEs wait until their 3rd year to really showcase who they are, if they’re going to become viable players. Zach Ertz, Austin Hooper, Jared Cook and Hunter Henry were top 10 TEs last year who didn’t really arrive until their 3rd year. So we’re going to look at Year 2 TEs first, then go into the Year 3 players.

Year 2 WRs: Greatness Takes Time

Becoming a great WR takes time. For every Randy Moss coming into the league and setting it on fire with 69 receptions, 1,313 yards and 17 TDs in his rookie year, there are many cases like Jerry Rice. You’ve heard of him, right? He’s the GOAT of WRs. His rookie year in 1985 he caught 49 balls for 927 yards and 3 TDs. The late HC Bill Walsh wondered how to unlock the first-rounder’s potential, so he called up then Mississippi Valley State HC Archie Cooley, who told Walsh to work Rice as hard, if not harder, than anyone else on the team. Rice responded with 86 catches, 1,570 yards and 15 TDs in his Year 2. The rest of his Hall of Fame career was just getting started.

Catching Up With A Martinez

Full disclosure, I was a fan of A Martinez before I ever met him in person. As an avid Dodger fan, I would listen to Martinez deftly handle the pre and postgame show that could mimic a war zone after particularly tough losses. Hosting DodgerTalk had him sitting with the legendary Ross Porter, who handled the fan base so well for more than 2 decades. I knew what his sitting in that seat meant.

Los Underrated Players Who Are Being Drafted Too Low

Sometimes you look at ADP lists and wonder, “why is that guy so low?” You file it away in the memory bank, knowing that this player might fall in drafts and be a value pick later. Our Arriba/Abajo series continues with the Underrated players. Los Muy Abajo. We came up with 3 players each at QB, RB and pass catcher— WR or TE —  that we think are aren’t getting enough love compared to the ADP of some other players. Muy Abajo. To figure ADP we used 4for4.com, which has an updated composite of several different sites that are conducting drafts. Let’s open up with the QBs (draft round is based on a 12-team league).

Overrated: The Players Who Are Too Arriba on Draft Boards

Our Arriba/Abajo series continues with the Overrated players. Los Muy Arriba. We came up with 3 players each at QB, RB and pass catcher— WR or TE —  that we think are going a little too high compared to the ADP of some other players. Muy Arriba. To figure ADP we used 4for4.com, which has a regularly updated composite of several different sites that are conducting drafts. Let’s open up with the QBs (Note: Draft round is based on a 12-team league).

Polo’s Big Shots

I’ve always had an affinity for people who are self-made.

My father, Juan, was a self-made man. He left school after the 6th grade and began driving a bus in Jalisco, Mexico when he was 13. When he and my mother came to El Norte and settled in the San Fernando Valley a few months before I was born, he had to reinvent himself. It took a few years of moving through factory jobs, but he eventually landed a job driving for Bonanza, a cement company. That led to him forming his own cement pump business, which he did for more than 30 years before retiring.

Arriba/Abajo: Overrated/Underrated Teams of the AFC

The AFC landscape had a seismic shift when TB12 took his talents to Tampa Bay. Will there be a new king in the AFC East? Is 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes ready to take the Chiefs on a similar run like the Patriots? Is Cleveland ready to FINALLY take a step forward after all those top draft picks (and coaching changes)?

Arriba/Abajo: Overrated/Underrated Teams of the NFC

The NFL offseason can be so long, that we overanalyze teams based on 16-game schedules (more if there’s playoffs) and then spend months hyping up some players while tempering the enthusiasm for others.

2019 Fantasy Draft: Otra Vez, the Do-Over

I should have taken it as an omen. And not a good one. Our first Familialogy location draft in San Diego on the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend 2019, and it was at a craft brewery. Wanting to be responsible, I called for a Lyft from the hotel to the brewery.
