BEAT WRITER SERIES: RAMS TALK WITH KEVIN MODESTI

Editor’s Note: This feature was written before Cam Akers’ season-ending Achilles injury on the eve of training camp. And after the Rams traded for Sony Michel on Aug. 25, this backfield has plenty of questions. So that section of the article has been updated. Gracias and Salud!

When I was 18 years old and just dipping my toe into covering high school football for the LA Daily News way back in 1986, Kevin Modesti was someone I really looked up to. He was on the beat covering the DODGERS.

POST R1 RBs: NOT MUCH TO SEE HERE

In a year when the RBs were far from exciting outside of a few players, the NFL Draft happened and it did not disappoint. Well, it was a letdown when two of the top three prospects on most everyone’s boards went to what appear to be committee situations. It was like that scene in Star Wars where Han Solo utters, “I have a bad feeling about this.”

THEY PICKED HIM? ROUND 1 TAKEAWAYS

As the 2021 NFL Draft unfolded, there were plenty of surprises. Many draft experts saw this draft as heavy with offensive players – especially QBs – in the first 10 picks. Thursday did not disappoint, with three QBs going in a row to start, and a total of five in the first round. The WRs found good landing spots and Kyle Pitts going down to Hotlanta is simply caliente. Here’s a quick breakdown on all the picks, with fantasy takeaways for those on the offensive side of the ball. Yes, linemen help fantasy football, so I’m giving them some love today.

WHO’S ON 3RD?

Yes, the Abbott and Costello reference is a little gratuitous and shows my age… todo bien. It really does sum up quickly the intrigue around the #3 pick to the 49ers in the NFL Draft starting on April 29.

FERNANDOMANIA: THE BEST OF TIMES

I don’t think of Fernando Valenzuela being born so much as he was touched by the heavens and his left arm was turned into an artistic masterpiece as beautiful and creative as any work of art or a classic piano concerto.

EMBRACE THE MADNESS! NFL FREE AGENCY 2021

Way back in February, in the cleanup stages from the Super Bowl, Adam Schefter tweeted that there could be as many as 18 teams making changes at the QB position. That’s more than half the teams that could be breaking in a new player at the most vital position in sports. Really?

SUPER SOPH: RUNNING BACKS

We heard about why rookie RBs would not be able to thrive in 2020. The lack of OTAs and preseason games would slow acclimation to the NFL game. Players might not have state-of-the-art training facilities to get their work in while dealing with closures caused by the pandemic.

TIME TO RETHINK THE LATE-ROUND QB?

In our Familia league, we chuckle at the photo of our first draft. It’s a big board, filled with stickers with players’ names in different colors making a big spreadsheet come to life. All our teams were on there for our first draft, which was in 2010.

ADENTRO Y AFUERA SUPER BOWL LV… WE MADE IT!

When I think back to late July, when NFL camps were opening up with an equal mix of limited fanfare and trepidation, I had an internal tug of war going on in my brain about the upcoming NFL season.
